10 Ways Tech Companies Can Recruit More Women Women in technology â€" or the lack thereof â€" is a tricky subject, and one that isn’t easy to resolve. Reports of bias, unequal pay, and limited opportunities abound. Even in the face of numbers that show a direct correlation between more women in leadership and higher returns on invested capital and sales, the tech industry remains confounded when it comes to finding, hiring, and retaining women. If you want to increase diversity and take advantage of the creative contribution of the other half of the human race, there are some practical things you can do. Here are 10 things tech companies need to do if they want to recruit â€" and hold onto â€" top female talent. 1) Go Where the Women Are In order to find female candidates, companies need to advertise where women are looking. It’s not hard to find online forums and communities that cater to the ladies of technology. Many of these sites, including big hitters like the Anita Borg Institute and Girls in Tech, have career boards and job postings. You don’t have to drop your usual posting practices, but augmenting your traditional recruiting efforts with ads on sites where technically talented women hang out will likely increase the number of female candidates applying to open positions. 2) Speak Their Language This isn’t a riff on “Women are from Venus” â€" female candidates are often attracted to different things in a job listing than their male counterparts. The tech industry is known for being brash, casual, and having the best perks a techie could ask for, but a lot of the language and benefits are tailored to young males. To attract female tech savants, emphasize flex time and on-site massages instead of free beer and the latest gaming consoles. Look at the words you use to describe your ideal candidate. Terms like “rock star” and “ninja” have distinctive male leanings. The key to a more inclusive workplace very well may start with the words you use to describe it. 3) Become More Family-Friendly It doesn’t matter how hip or edgy a company is, people are still bound to start families eventually. Making moms feel valued and respected can be as easy as offering child care assistance, providing a room for nursing mothers, or providing generous parental leave. And don’t overlook a proactive transitional program that invites new parents to come back to a supportive workplace environment. 4) Provide Upward Mobility One thing that drives women out of the tech workforce is limited opportunity. You’ll go a long way to attracting and keeping talented women by focusing on their future. Mentorship programs are a great way to foster growth and longevity. It shows you are invested in the women who work for you and see opportunity for them to grow and excel professionally. Encourage them to take additional training and attend professional conferences â€" and provide financial support for such opportunities. Women will be a lot more likely to invest in your company if you’ve invested in them. 5) Equal Pay for Equal Work This should go without saying, but women in technical jobs should be paid the same as their male counterparts. Take a long, hard look at your payroll to see if there is inequity between male and female employees who are doing the same job. Implement a grading system that is tied to the job description, not the individual in the position. Evaluate your review processes and note trends in promotions and raises. Anywhere you see inequity, you need to start over. 6) Be Flexible The modern workplace is changing. People can now work from virtually anywhere, including a Caribbean beach chair. Flexibility is one of the most important things to today’s workers, especially women who are trying to balance their roles at home and in the office. Offering flexi time and remote work options can pique female employees’ interest in a job and increase their desire to stay on board. If your office embraces flexibility, emphasize that in job postings and recruiting information. 7) Start at the Top It can be difficult to inspire a new female recruit with her long-term prospects at your organization if there are no women in leadership. Provide female role models at every level of leadership, and actively encourage women to go after promotions and seek advancement. If women aren’t represented at the executive level, what motivation is there for a female candidate to join your team? Commit to diversity in leadership â€" and include at least one woman in the recruitment process. 8) Build the Right Pipelines Creating a more diverse tech workplace isn’t going to happen overnight. Companies that are truly dedicated to change need to play the long game. Start building relationships right now with technical programs, schools, and organizations. Set up internship or job-shadowing programs that give girls and women the opportunity to test out your company and the possibilities a tech career offers. Volunteer to speak to a high school STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) group and sponsor training programs or scholarships for female students. 9) Implement Diverse Hiring Strategies Leave no stone unturned when it comes to finding diverse, qualified talent to add to your organization. Be sure to include at least one female employee in the recruiting process, and regularly evaluate all job descriptions and postings for exclusionary language. How Can Recruiters Deal with the “Dear John” E-mail We have all had one of these emails in our recruitment lives. So how do you deal with one? It happened today. First day back from my holidays and the night before you return, you drop all your placed candidates and pending starters a lovely text to say “Hi! I am back, how are things? Let’s catch up during the day.” and everyone bar The One texts you back to say “Yes, great! Speak at (insert time)” Why didnt they text back? So, the “one who didn’t text back” your paranoid mind immediately suspects the worst. Your rational brain says: Be reasonable, you text on a Sunday night; you can’t expect someone to respond then But then Sunday night becomes Monday morning and before you know it, it is already 10.30 in the morning and you are thinking, “Why haven’t they text me yet?!. You hold off calling and sending another text as you don’t want to sound like a stalker. You update with their new employer, your client who is waiting to embrace them with open arms this time next week. You know, new PC, mobile and business cards sat waiting training booked in, place on the next night out paid for.. The e-mail: Then the email from The One  pings into your inbox at 10.45am. Your heart pounds as you scan read the first paragraph. Then you realise the email is to your AND the client as well, so you know now there is no way back as they clearly don’t want to be convinced or cajoled by you and are clearly not taking it. Oh, I am assuming you are paranoid too which is why my fear was right. They are backing out of the offer, extending gracious thanks, apology  to bothand so on. Bear in mind, said candidate has been for dinner with the client (paid for personally by them), has been emailing and speaking to the client directly as recently as last Wednesday  to sort out start times and  a client visit next week What next? I have spoken to my client again now. She is literally devastated as apart from the disappointment of them not starting, they had discussed candidates doing this to THEM in the past and apparently my candidate had even commented on how cowardly an email rejection was. Oh the irony! And yet, they thought it was acceptable to let my client down this way? Double standards? How to deal with the situation: Now call me soft but I always give the benefit of the doubt: something has obviously changed in that person’s situation and you know what, had they just  called me and the client, I would have not tried to convince them (anyone who knows me professionally will know I totally respect and advocate my candidates making their own decisions.) but to at least have the courtesy to CALL me and tell me. RING my client in person.. But it is the way in which it was done. An email is a coward’s way out. It is true. It shows a lack of respect for the time the client and recruiter have taken even if you acknowledge that in your email which this candidate did; it is a reflection of your integrity to pick the phone up and explain the reasons WHY you can’t start employment for that client. How do YOU deal with this? It does happen to every recruiter, although hopefully not too often. What scenarios have you had which sound worse than this? Is it a reflection of you as a recruiter or is it just a transactional way of dealing with it? Am I too soft or am I right to think this candidate took the coward’s way out? In the words of Debbie Harry’s infamous song “Call me” .. with important  news. Save the emails and texts for confirmations and minor info. Not the important stuff like changes in circumstances or altering your decision, whatever the reason.. That is just my sentiment in life generally.

Book review Det gener - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Tor N?rretranders has written an excellent book about generosity. It has gotten a decent amount of media exposure since it came out, mostly due to some (literally) sexy catchphrases. But the book has merit far beyond easy catchphrases. Humans are generous, artistic, flamboyant, playful individualists. And whats more, were the happiest when we can be all of that. Why? In my opinion, one of the deepest human drives, is the drive to be part of something bigger than oneself. This explains many human endeavours from organized religion to explorers. To take part in, a worthwhile cause that goes way beyond my personal interest this gives life meaning. George Bernard Shaw said it like this: This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one the being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. And Wei Wu Wei pointed to the other side of that equation (as quoted in Ken Wilbers Book No Boundary): Why are you unhappy? Because 99.9% Of everything you think, and Of everything you do, Is for yourself And there isnt one The paradox is of course this: If you do things for others, knowing that it will make you happy, are you still doing it for others? But this is only a paradox when you base your thinking on the assumption, that you can either do things for yourself or for others. I suspect that the two are inextricably linked that you cant do good for yourself without helping others and vice versa. Thus the paradox disappears. Tors book provides solid scientific reasons for why this might be so, based on the two principal mechanisms of Darwinism natural selection and sexual selection. Natural selection encourages selfishness and uniformity while sexual selection promotes generosity and heterogeneity. I dont think the book offers solid proof that this is the origin of generosity and art, but theres ample circumstantial evidence. As usual with Tor N?rretranders, the book is entertaining, well structured, informative and an easy read. I recommend it highly. Thanks for visiting my blog.
